Countermeasures
Countermeasures is the scientific word for things people do to stay awake when
their body would rather be asleep. People have lots of tricks they use to stay awake
when they start to feel sleepy. This include rolling down the windows, turning on the
air conditioner, or playing the stereo loud. These three are the most common, and
unfortunately do not work. Dr. Jim Horne, Director of the Loughborough University Sleep Research Center,
studies each of these methods for staying awake and fond that they only help for a few
minutes. I can confirm this with my own first hand experience. The time I fell
alseep while driving and crashed, the windows down and the stereo as loud as it would go.
There are a number of other tricks driver uses that have not been studies. These include
chewing gum, slapping your face, talking on a cell phone, and singing to yourself. While
little research as been conducted on these techniques, we advise drivers not to rely on them.
There are, in fact, only three things that been shown to keep people awake when their are
tired. These are naps, caffenine, and exercise.
